Let’s Go Chasing Waterfalls!

If this isn’t one of the wonders of the world it should be, Iguazu Falls. According to Wikipedia (Click HERE for more)

“Upon seeing Iguazu, the United States First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt reportedly exclaimed “Poor Niagara!”[3] (which, at 50 m or 165 feet, are a third shorter). Often Iguazu also is compared with Victoria Falls in Southern Africa, which separates Zambia and Zimbabwe. Iguazu is wider, but because it is split into approximately 275 discrete falls and large islands, Victoria has the largest curtain of water in the world, at more than 1,600 m (5,249 ft) wide and over 100 m (328 ft) in height (in low flow Victoria is split into five by islands; in high flow it may be uninterrupted). The only wider falls are extremely large rapid-like falls, such as the Boyoma Falls (Stanley Falls).”

It took us three days and two nights of driving to reach the falls in the mighty Toyota squirrel car (which we now call it because of the obvious squirrel propulsion). If we had the motorcycles I wouldn’t have made this trip, it was long, straight, boring and as we came to find out extremely hot and humid. Off and on, there and back, there was heavy rain which only added to the humidity. All conditions that make motorcycle riding miserable.

Doing research on the internet on how best to view the falls was tricky, any search terms bring up endless ads for tours and hotel, guide packages that were really expensive. Finally  we decided to drive to the park and see what happens. It was easy, 90 pesos to park which about $8.00 and just under 400 pesos for both of us to get in, about $25.00. Once we were in we picked up a free map of the walking routes and off we went. On the Argentina side you can get view points from all angles by just walking, no guide needed.

Of course we took a million pictures, none of them professional quality. Click on any of the pictures to go to my smugmug account to see even more. It was an overcast day which was good from the heat perspective but robbed us of seeing all of the purported rainbows that accompany the falls. I’ll try to capture some of the gist here.

You get the idea that we were in jungle conditions, hot, sticky and thick overgrowth. They warned us to stay on the trail but there was really little chance of doing otherwise.

Really, my pictures don’t do it justice, probably best to google it in and look at some of the professional ones.

We were not alone… did I mention it was a holiday weekend? Lots of people.

We spent most of the time walking on these metal walkways, over and around the waterfalls.

At one point Deby looked down and saw a birds nest through the grate – with baby birds. And…. she got a great picture.

Later in the day we walked to the lower part of the falls.

I like this picture for some reason, everyone having fun. Literally a snapshot in time.

Here’s me in full tourist mode. Glad we brought raincoats.

I’m glad we made the drive, it’s a highly recommended place to visit although totally out of the way from anywhere else. When we got back to our cabana I checked my phone,  lots of steps. Over 10 miles, glad for good shoes.

I figured I deserved a big juicy burger after all that. Check out this baby, beef, ham, bacon, cheese and an egg. Yummm.

One parting shot – big bugs outside the cabana. Good idea to keep the doors closed.

Motorcycle update…… it’s the weekend so I didn’t really expect to hear anything but I got a disturbing e-mail from my shipping contact down here. She logged into the transport companies website and they have no record of the bikes. In a panic she asked me to contact my Seattle shipper, where are they? I left a message, she will be in the office 9:00 AM Seattle time on Monday which is 2:00 PM here. Frustrating to say the least. Tomorrow we drive back to Buenos Aires and will stay at a hotel near the airport so if by chance they find two 1000 pound crates somewhere with our names on them and they show up I will be ready.

Thanks for all the comments here and on Deby’s facebook account, it’s fun to hear from home.

  1. If making the trip to Iguazu Falls its well worth spending the money to stay at the Sheraton, an excellent hotel and the only hotel adjacent to the falls. The viewing platforms, that were so crowded for your visit, open to hotel guests at 8 AM, to the general public at 10 AM.
With very few people around the two hours gives plenty of time for relaxed exploration or the falls.
My wife and I rode the Pan America just a couple of months after your previous ride south, followed your blog, and used a couple of your hotel recommendations. We carried on to Ushuaia before returning to Canada and shipping to Europe. Bikes are stored in Germany for winter now but we keep going. So far we have enjoyed 45 countries with our motorcycles. Could be we will run into you on the road someday.
    Stay safe!

    • Hi! Thanks for the reply. It sounds like you are having a fantastic adventure, I’m glad some of our hotel stays helped. We checked out the Sheraton but with the holiday weekend everything was full in the whole surrounding area which is why we ended up in Wanda. Where to next? Do you keep a blog? Yes, I hope we cross paths some time. Ride safe – Donn

  3. You are off and rolling, although not on two wheels (bummer). I’ll be following your progress and hope all goes well for you two. Both books should be available by the end of the year—I’m saving a special one for you! Enjoy every moment. Keith

    • Hi Keith, I can’t wait to read the book when we get back. Will it be available on Amazon? Glad you are following along, I think you will see some familiar places.

  4. cool hope you guys are having fun and the bug looked cool do you know what type of bug it is and I like the birds they were cute have more fun

    • Hi Sophia, Deby and I are so glad you are following our adventure. No, I have no idea what kind of bug that was. Of course, I had to poke it with a stick and it didn’t even move. Strange. I don’t think it was dead, there was really a lot of them on the trees. Maybe they wake up at night when it’s cooler?
