On our way South!

How far south can we go? How far south should we go? Will we make to the southern most road in Chile? What about the political stability of the countries we will be going to? Do we have all the correct paperwork for the border crossings? Will the bikes make it? Will we??? One way to find out….

Departure day, December 28, 2023. I suppose we could have ridden the motorcycles from the start but burrrrrr it’s cold in the mountains and usually full of snow. Nope, we’ve wised up over the years. Let’s start in a warm truck sipping hot coffee and munching on homemade cookies from our neighbor Lisa (thanks!)

Dang, rental trucks are loud, but the noise cancelling ear buds really help. Good for music and podcasts but challenging for having a conversation.

Even Deby got in on the action.

Every journey starts with a single step, and hotel room. Looking at the map shows that we have a little way to go.

First hotel night… let the Crazy 8s tournament begin.

We finally got off I-84 in Twin Falls, ID and then south on lonely Highway 93. We were at high elevations and cold temperatures but fortunately no snow or rain. Mostly straight roads. No cruise control on the U-Haul so we had to pay attention, I miss my adaptive cruise and steering assist on my modern car.

Sunset is early this time of year but made for some nice colors on the surrounding hills.

We paid a little extra for the nicest hotel in Wells, NV arriving to a glowing sunset at about 4:30 PM.

I was really impressed with the view from the hot tub, aaaahhh.

Oh, wait. I should zoom out a little.

It didn’t matter, we left it on all night including the smoothest of smooth jazz that played along with the view.

Tomorrow we stop and unload the bikes at our friend Chuck’s house in Henderson, NV. From there the riding begins!

Thanks for following and the comments even though I don’t usually have a chance to reply to them all it’s good to hear from you.

feliz año nuevo

  1. I get so much joy out of tracking your adventures and reading your commentaries. Here we go again! Thanks for taking me along for the ride. I’m heading to Astoria to deliver work for a show…..hmmm somehow my south bound adventure just doesn’t measure up 🙂

  2. Vacariously riding along, again :). Your lust for moto travel is inspiring. Thanks for sharing!

  3. It’s so fun to travel vicariously with Deby and Donn! I’m curious as to how you manage the Darien Gap. Ferry?
    Happy Trails!

  4. Donn & Deby,

Thanks for including me in your adventure. Am anxious to follow you trek through Mexico. Made MX trip with a pal back in 2018; tentative planning another in 2024, or 2025. Cartel activities of concern. Wanted to go thru Copper Canyon – then down south to Mazatlan – Baja Ferry to La Paz – then up the Baja returning to USA. You have a good trip & stay safe!

    Hal

  5. Love the lonely highways, no matter what you’re driving or riding! Torm & I had a blast on our Lonely Highway adventures last year! Looking forward to following along and Happy New Year Amigos!
